Twist of Plug Tobacco - Inventory Number: MIS 302 / SOLD
Hand-twisted chewing or pipe tobacco
Twist tobacco, commonly referred to as plug tobacco. Made from cured tobacco leaves twisted tightly into a rope-like form, this type of tobacco was favored by soldiers, sailors, and frontiersmen for its durability, portability, and ease of use. The user would slice or bite off a portion for chewing or shaving into a pipe.
Twist tobacco was widely used during the American Civil War and remained popular well into the late 1800s. This example shows the characteristic hand-twisted form, with visible leaf textures and rich, dark coloration from aging and curing. Often carried in haversacks or pockets, it was a staple among troops and laborers alike.
Well-preserved with natural aging; dry and brittle with typical dark patina. Measures approximately 7” x 2 ¼”.
