U.S Model 1816/1822 Musket by Asa Waters Confederate Conversion by Union Manufacturing Company, Richmond, Virginia - Inventory Number:  RIF 170

U.S. Model 1816 “Type II” musket, sometimes referred to as the Model 1822. This is one of 21,560 produced under contract by Asa Waters of Millbury, Massachusetts. This example was converted to percussion by Union Manufacturing Company of Richmond, Virginia. The firm converted at least 10,000 muskets between November 1861 through May 1862 using the distinctive curved bottom bolster and the marking code “U” stamped on the inner face of the hammer. The lock bears the markings “US / A. WATERS / MILLBURY / 1825”. The iron surfaces of the musket have toned down to a smooth, medium brown patina. The lock mechanics are crisp and hold on all positions, and the nipple is original and in well worn condition. The ramrod is a replacement of unusual form, likely of Confederate manufacture and added when the musket was converted. The stock remains in very good condition with typical dings and dents from service and has a pair of initials carved into the comb. This is a great southern used weapon that's as Confederate as a Richmond Rifle-Musket.
