U.S. Model 1855 Cartridge Box by Boyd & Sons, 1863 - Inventory Number: LEA 453

Offered here is an original Civil War U.S. Model 1855 cartridge box, manufactured in 1863 by Boyd & Sons of Boston. Constructed of black bridle leather, the box retains its bold, original “US” oval cartridge box plate, affixed through the outer flap. The leather exhibits honest surface crazing consistent with field use but remains structurally sound.

This example is missing its interior cartridge tins and both roller buckles beneath the box—conditions frequently seen on hard-used wartime examples. The inner flap is clearly and deeply incised with the initials “T.R.” on either side of the “Boyd & Sons / Boston” maker’s stamp, likely denoting the original soldier-owner. The presence of these period-cut initials adds a compelling layer of personal history.  A solid, untouched cartridge box.
