U.S. Model 1861 Springfield Rifle-Musket Dated 1862 - Inventory Number: RIF 241
This is a U.S. Model 1861 Springfield rifle-musket, dated 1862, produced during the height of the American Civil War. As the primary infantry weapon of the Union Army, the Springfield Model 1861 was a .58 caliber, single-shot, muzzle-loading rifle-musket with a 40-inch barrel and three-band configuration. It fired the deadly Minie ball and was effective at ranges up to 500 yards.
Manufactured at the Springfield Armory, this example features standard iron fittings, a walnut stock with inspector cartouches, and a clearly stamped lockplate reading "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" with the American eagle and "1862" date. The barrel is similarly dated at the breech and fitted with a rear sight and bayonet lug.
The 1862 production year places this weapon in the thick of Civil War combat, from the Peninsula Campaign through Antietam and Fredericksburg. Its rugged design and reliability made it the backbone of Union firepower-and a lasting symbol of the war's brutal infantry engagements.
