U.S. Puppy Paw Plate on Model 1840 Belt - Inventory Number: BEL 580

This original U.S. Model 1839 oval belt plate—commonly known as a “puppy paw” plate—is mounted on an authentic Model 1840 waist belt. The brass plate features raised “US” lettering within an oval border and is backed by the classic early-war “puppy paw” style stud configuration, along with the arrowhead belt hook, all firmly intact with its original solder.

The black leather belt is an excellent example of the Model 1840 pattern, showing hand-stitched construction and cut to accept the stud-style plate. This early style of belt and plate combination saw use throughout the 1840s and into the Civil War, particularly with pre-war regulars and early-war volunteers.

A highly desirable and well-preserved U.S. accoutrement that illustrates the transition from antebellum military gear into wartime use. Ideal for collectors focused on early U.S. military equipment or Civil War belt rigs.
