    U.S. Enlistedman’s Belt Marked “A.B. Covell” - Inventory Number: LEA 316 / SOLD

U.S. issued enlistedman’s waist belt with an 1839 pattern belt buckle with a deep, uncleaned bronze patina. The rear is lead filled with stud style belt hooks behind the ‘S”, commonly referred to as “puppy paws” by collectors. These were typical of early Civil War buckles. The leather is extremely soft and supple with the name “A.B. Covell” painted on the inside and an additional ink identification as well which we have not attempted to decipher. The closest match in the Civil War Research Database is Ashley B. Covell, who enlisted in September 1864 as a private in the 2nd New York Cavalry. An honest, well-worn Civil War belt in good condition.
