War Department Treasury Warrant Signed by Jefferson Davis as Secretary of War - Inventory Number: CON 595

    Dated February 10, 1854

Rare and historically significant partly printed and manuscript document issued by the War Department, measuring approximately 8” x 12.5”, dated February 10, 1854, and boldly signed “Jefferson Davis” as Secretary of War, a position he held from 1853 to 1857 under President Franklin Pierce.

This document is a formal authorization requesting the Secretary of the Treasury to issue a payment warrant on behalf of A.A.G.M. (Assistant Adjutant General’s Office), in favor of the Treasurer of the United States, in the amount of $403.25. The amount is in reference to Requisition No. 2933, issued February 6, 1854. The manuscript text outlines the specific requisition and certification of funds.

Also signed by S. M. Broadhead, Second Comptroller, and F. Burt, Third Auditor.

The document features the official War Department eagle engraving at upper left and includes a prominent hand-cut seal hole, a standard method of document validation for the period.

Jefferson Davis’s bold, flowing signature as Secretary of War is prominently placed at lower right, predating his presidency of the Confederate States of America. Documents signed by Davis in this cabinet role are considerably scarcer than his Confederate presidential documents and offer valuable insight into his early federal career and the antebellum War Department’s administration.

Comes housed in 14 x 20 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
