War of 1812 U.S. Cavalry Saber by Nathan Starr - Inventory Number: SWO 311

Model 1812/1813 with Inspected Blade and Metal Scabbard

An iconic early American cavalry saber manufactured by Nathan Starr under U.S. government contract during the War of 1812. This is the Model 1812/1813, representing one of the earliest standardized saber patterns adopted by the United States for mounted troops.

The saber features a curved single-edged blade measuring approximately 35 inches, with a broad fuller extending nearly to the point. The blade is clearly marked: “N. STARR” – Denoting the maker, Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut, “V” – For “Visually Inspected”, “U.S.” – U.S. government contract acceptance. “LS” – The inspector’s initials for Luther Sage, a known government arms inspector of the period.

The iron stirrup-hilt is integral to the tang and includes a plain iron knucklebow, backstrap, and a grooved wooden grip—original leather-wrapped with twisted wire are present. The saber is housed in its original iron scabbard, complete with twin suspension rings and throat, showing a deep, untouched patina.

These sabers saw service throughout the War of 1812 and into the early 19th century, forming the backbone of the fledgling U.S. cavalry’s edged weapons inventory. Marked examples with clear government inspection stamps are increasingly scarce.

Condition: Very good. Blade markings remain crisp and legible. Wood grip solid with typical age wear; original leather wrap. Scabbard complete and free from major dents, with rich age patina. A well-preserved and historically important American cavalry saber from the early Republic.
