Large circa 1890s William H. Tipton photograph of the monument to the 40th New York “Mozart Regiment” at the base of Little Round Top, dedicated in 1888. Tipton’s signature is visible on the print at bottom right. The print is adhered to a 17” by 12” mat and is somewhat yellowed but in overall good condition.
William H. Tipton (1850-1929) was a Gettysburg native and apprentice of the Tyson Brothers photographers as early as 1862. After the war he opened his own studio in Gettysburg and became one of the most well-known photographers in the nation for his battlefield views.
