Wonderful Grouping of the 19th Maine Infantry - Inventory Number: GRO 080 / SOLD
Heavily Engaged at Gettysburg Losing 53% of the Regiment at Gettysburg!
19th Maine was organized at Bath, Maine and mustered into Federal service for a three-year enlistment on August 25, 1862.
The total loss of the 19th Maine in the two days of fighting [at Gettysburg] were 12 officers and 220 men, almost 53% of the 19th. The regiment took into battle on the second day of July 440 officers and men.”
1,441 men served in the 19th Maine Infantry Regiment during its service. It lost 192 enlisted men killed in action or died of wounds. 501 members of the regiment were wounded in action, 184 died of disease, and 47 died in Confederate prisons for a total of 376 fatalities from all causes.
The regiment was discharged from service on May 31, 1865 following the Union victory.
Silver 2nd Corps Badge Inscribed to Captain Small
Wonderful wartime example with silver hanger bar bearing the inscription: “Capt. O. R. Small” The original silk ribbon suspends a 1 3/8” x 1 ½” silver trefoil with beautifully engraved boarder and inscription: “A.A.G. 1st Brigd. 2nd Div. 2nd A.C.” The original attachment “T-bar” pin and suspension bar are in good order on the reverse.
Gold Washed Circular Corps Badge
Constructed with white enameled 2nd Division, 2nd Corps trefoil surrounded by hand engraved sunburts terminating with a series of 16 blue enameled stars on a wiggle work field. The reverse retains the original “T-bar” pin device for attachment. Measures 5/8” diameter.

A very good condition bust view of Small wearing his captains frock coat. Cardstock is untrimmed with double gold boarder and with pencil inscription on the reverse stating: O.R. Small / Capt. 19th Me. Vols. Backmark: W.C. Tuttle / Photographist, / Union, Maine/”

This photograph of the Field, Staff and Line Officers was taken in June 1865. The granite building the men are standing in front of is the State Capital by S.W. Sawyer Bangor, ME. There are 42 individuals in the image, the following members are identified. Several of the members can be seen wearing identical corps badges as the one in this grouping.

T = Positively identified
Captain Oliver R. Small – He resided in West Gardiner ME. And enlisted on 8/25/1862 as a Sergeant at 23 years of age. He mustered into "F" Co. ME 19th Infantry where he was promoted to1st Sergt in 1863. Then promoted to 2nd Lieut. in 1864 and also to 1st Lieut. as of Co. E. Once again, Small was promoted in 1864 to Captain of Co. K. He was Mustered Out on 5/31/1865.
