Wood Canteen Carried by William R. Gaylard, 3rd North Carolina Infantry, Wounded at Antietam - Inventory Number: CON 261 / SOLD

Wooden drum canteen attributed to Lieutenant William R. Gaylard of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry, who had his kneecap shot off at the Battle of Antietam. The canteen is manufactured from two wooden disks held together by six staves and 2 iron straps. The iron straps have three parallel sets of nails that once held leather sling strap loops in place. It measures 7” wide by 2 ½” wide. The original red milk paint has developed a wonderful, aged patina. The spout has been slightly widened by a nesting mouse long ago. A wonderful and attractive Confederate canteen.
