1840’s Militia Officer’s Sword with Indian Princess Pommel Mother-of-Pearl Grip - Inventory Number: SWO 317

A highly decorative mid-19th century American militia officer’s sword featuring a distinctive cast brass hilt with a prominent “Indian Princess” pommel — a stylized female bust in feathered headdress, emblematic of American liberty and classical allegory. The grip is composed of alternating bands of shimmering mother-of-pearl and brass wire spacers, adding striking visual appeal.

The crossguard displays a deeply cast American eagle with spread wings and shield on its chest, surrounded by a wreath and national symbols. The sword retains its original gilt brass scabbard, richly adorned with repoussé foliate scrolls and patriotic motifs, including another spread-wing eagle in low relief.

These swords were typically used by militia officers during the antebellum period through the Civil War era. While not intended for battlefield use, they carried strong patriotic and symbolic weight in parades, meetings, and public ceremonies.

Attractive light patina to the brass, intact grip with full mother-of-pearl panels, and finely detailed decoration throughout. Scabbard fits well and retains its original stud and ring mounts.  Blade is etched with strong traced of blued finish.
