    1862 Cooke’s U.S. Cavalry Tactics ID’d to William E. Brown 1st Wisconsin Cavalry, with Multiple Autographs - Inventory Number: IDE 127 / SOLD

    Cavalry Tactics or Regulations for The Instruction, Formations, and Movements of The Cavalry of The Army And Volunteers Of The United States. Volume II by Brigadier General Philip St. George Cooke (father in law of JEB Stuart.) The front page is inscribed in pencil “Camp Harvey Jan 18th 1862. Headquarters 1st Regt. Wis. Cavalry Col. E. Daniels Com. William Brown’s Book.” William Brown collected other signatures from members of the regiment on the same page. Charles C. Townsend signed in ink “C.C. Townsend Co C 1st Wis Cav.” Major Newton James of the 1st Wisconsin also added his signature in pencil. The back page of the manual has the pencil inscription “William Brown’s Book Comp C. Capt Decker” in reference to James W. Decker, captain of company C. A wonderful manual worthy of any Civil War or cavalry collection.
