Ames Model 1840 Artillery Saber – Dated 1863 - Inventory Number: SWO 318

A classic example of the Model 1840 Artillery Saber, manufactured by the famed Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, and clearly dated 1863—a prime year of Civil War production.

This regulation U.S. artillery saber features a curved, single-edged blade measuring approximately 32 inches in length, with a wide fuller and smooth steel surfaces showing only light age-related patina. The ricasso is deeply stamped with the “Ames Mfg. Co / Chicopee / Mass” mark on one side and “U.S. / J.H. / 1863” on the opposite, denoting government inspection and acceptance.

The brass hilt includes a D-shaped knucklebow and flat pommel cap, with an even, mellow patina. The leather-covered grip is wrapped with its original twisted brass wire, both in very good condition with only minor wear from age.

Housed in its original steel scabbard, complete with throat, suspension rings, and drag. The scabbard has a smooth, untouched surface with only minor dings and wear consistent with service use.

Carried by mounted artillerymen throughout the Civil War, the Model 1840 was a durable and dependable sidearm. This 1863-dated example, produced by the Union’s premier sword contractor, is a fine representative of the type and an essential piece for any Civil War edged weapons collection.
