Brick from the Historic “Illinois State Journal” Office – Early Lincoln Site, Springfield, IL- Inventory Number: POL 393

This remarkable relic consists of original brick salvaged from the old Illinois State Journal newspaper office in Springfield, Illinois, once located on the east side of Sixth Street between Washington and Jefferson. According to local tradition, “it was in this very building that Abraham Lincoln received word of his nomination and election to the presidency in 1860, while awaiting the latest news in the Journal office.

Lincoln maintained a strong and supportive relationship with the Illinois State Journal, and the site later became home to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. This piece was privately obtained in the early 1980s,” making it a rare and meaningful connection to Lincoln’s political ascent and Springfield’s journalistic history.

Housed with two original labels—one typewritten and one handwritten—documenting its origin and significance.
