CDV of President Andrew Johnson by Morse’s Gallery – Nashville, Tennessee - Inventory Number: CDV 587

This original Civil War-era carte-de-visite features a seated portrait of Andrew Johnson, who became the 17th President of the United States following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Johnson is shown in a formal pose wearing a waistcoat and cravat, his stern expression captured in rich sepia tones.

The reverse bears the imprint of Morse’s Gallery of the Cumberland, a well-known Nashville photographic studio active during the war. It includes three partially intact two-cent orange revenue stamps, each canceled with an “X” — a requirement for photographs during the Civil War due to the 1864 federal tax on photographs.

Faint manuscript notations including “No. Negative” and “13” are visible on the back, indicating this was likely part of a studio catalog or order system.

An excellent example of presidential photography, Southern studio work, and Civil War-era tax history — all in one piece.
