Civil War Union 8-ring canteen. This is the classic style known to collectors as the "Bullseye” pattern with the reinforcement rings stamped on each side. It still has all three of the original strap loops present. The pewter spout bears the maker’s mark “H. B. & Co. PHILAD” for Horstmann Bros. & Co., which produced 50,000 of this variety for an August 1862 contract. This canteen was painted gold many years ago, a common practice of veterans’ organizations like the Grand Army of the Republic. It has an old replacement cotton sling. This is a Civil War canteen with some character that would display well in any canteen or GAR collection.
