Civil War Army Surgical Manual - Inventory Number: MED 291

1861 First Edition - A Practical Treatise on Military Surgery by Frank Hastings Hamilton, M.D.

An important and influential Civil War-era medical manual, A Practical Treatise on Military Surgery, authored by renowned surgeon Frank Hastings Hamilton and published in 1861 by Baillière Brothers, New York. This is the scarce first edition, issued at the outbreak of the Civil War and rapidly adopted by Union Army medical personnel.

The volume provides comprehensive instruction in field surgery, treatment of gunshot wounds, amputations, and camp diseases, reflecting Hamilton's deep experience as a professor of military surgery and his service with the 33rd Regiment, New York State Artillery. The title page lists Hamilton's numerous academic and clinical credentials, including his posts at Bellevue Hospital and Long Island College Hospital.

The book is complete with its original title page bearing the Baillière publisher's crest and international publishing information. Light toning throughout, with some age-related edge wear typical of field-use volumes, but overall a very good and complete example of a cornerstone work in Civil War military medicine.

An essential artifact for any serious collector of Civil War medical history or 19th-century surgical literature.

Comes housed in 12 x 16 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
