Civil War Field Tourniquet – In Original Wrapper - Inventory Number: MED 301
Unissued Condition – Marked “Tiencken”
This is an extremely scarce Civil War field tourniquet, in remarkable like-new, unissued condition, still sealed in its original string-tied paper wrapper. Boldly hand-inscribed on the wrapper is the label “Field Tourniquet”, penned in period ink by the manufacturer. This tourniquet is part of a rare group believed to originate from an intact discovery of a dozen identical examples.
Identical to those pictured in Dr. Dammann’s Encyclopedia of Civil War Medical Instruments and Equipment, this model was manufactured by Julius Tiencken of New York, whose name is stamped on the side of the brass buckle. Tiencken held a Civil War contract with the U.S. Hospital Department, but due to the limited scale of his production, few of his medical instruments survive today.
The cloth strap is tightly wound around a yellow-painted brass buckle and pad, typical of wartime field tourniquets. This example remains completely wrapped and unopened, making it a standout piece for any advanced Civil War medical or military collection.
True untouched examples like this—especially in original packaging—are nearly impossible to find. A museum-grade artifact.
Comes housed in 16 x 12 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
