Civil War US ‘Bullseye” Canteen - Inventory Number: CAN 109 / SOLD

Civil War Union 5-ring canteen. This is the classic style known to collectors as the “Bullseye” pattern with reinforcement rings stamped on each side. It has all three strap loops present along with an original cork stopper. The pewter spout bears the makers mark of R. H. Gratz & Co. of Philadelphia, a gas meter manufacturer that received contracts for 95,000 concentric ring canteens between July 1862 and July 1863. This canteen was painted gold many years ago, a common practice of veterans’ organizations like the Grand Army of the Republic. It has an old replacement red and white woolen sling. This is an interesting Civil War canteen that would display well in any canteen or GAR collection.
