Confederate Brass Fuse Adapter – Recovered at Chancellorsville - Inventory Number: CON 590
This is an original Confederate brass fuse adapter, excavated from the battlefield at Chancellorsville, Virginia—site of General Robert E. Lee’s most audacious victory during the Civil War. These fuse adapters were threaded into the tops of artillery shells and served as housings for paper time fuses, allowing for timed detonation upon firing.
This specimen features well-preserved external threads, visible tooling marks, and a shallow shoulder flange with vent holes for ignition channeling. The adapter has developed a deep, olive-toned patina from burial and age, with light battlefield corrosion consistent with long-term ground exposure.
Artifacts recovered from Chancellorsville are highly prized for their association with one of the most significant and tactically complex engagements of the war. This fuse adapter stands as a powerful relic of Confederate ordnance and artillery science.
