Edward Barnes and Sons “Old Zach” Civil War Bowie - Inventory Number: EDG 105 / SOLD
Edward Barnes and sons “Old Zach” Civil War Bowie. Wonderful example with 6 3/4-inch blade 12 inches overall. Blade retains much of the frosting and luster, there is an eagle holding a bundle of arrows above two scrolls. The inscription on the left, "United States, the land of the free and the /home of the brave/ protected by their noble and brave/volunteers". There is an eagle in between the scrolls. The second scroll on the right side reads, "Americans/ask for nothing but what is right/and subject to nothing that is/wrong". Some fading to the bottom of the motifs from sharpening.
Maj. Gen. Zachary Taylor was a hero of the Mexican-American War and was elected President in 1849. He died in office less than a year later in 1850. These "Old Zach" Bowie's witnessed the turbulent times leading up to and through the Civil War. The semi-clip point blade is still razor sharp. It retains much of its original polish. The silver “cutlery” handle is excellent and has a decent bulk to it, making it well balanced in hand. The knife comes with its original scabbard which is trimmed on its borders in gold leaf and in the center, Zachary Taylor wearing a bicorn hat and the legend “Old Zach”. The silver drag is lacking as is the button stud from the top mount. A very attractive large clipped-point Bowie knife.
