Noncommissioned Officer’s Sash - Inventory Number: UNI 179 / SOLD
Original Civil War officer’s maroon silk sash in very good condition. Worn by Federal officers in most of the branches of the United States Army, the waist sash was a common uniform accoutrement that signified a symbol of authority in the military during both field operations and camp duty. The sash, when worn over the frock coat, was wrapped twice around the waist and looped on the left side. The officer’s leather sword belt was worn over this sash. This specimen exhibits a maroon color and measures 6” wide by 108” in total length. The sash has a rich, unfaded color with one small tear that doesn't go all the way through, very little wear and strong, full-length tassels. Original Civil War silk sashes are becoming difficult to find in the collecting field today. An excellent example.
