Rare Circular Civil War Hardtack Biscuit Marked “AMERICAN” - Inventory Number: MIS 301

Preserved by J.T. Pharo, 2nd Missouri Infantry

An exceptionally rare example of preserved Civil War hardtack—circular in form and boldly impressed with the word “AMERICAN” across its surface. This military-issue biscuit is a tangible reminder of the daily trials faced by Union soldiers in the field. Most notable is its provenance: it was reportedly brought home as a wartime memento by J.T. Pharo, a member of the 2nd Missouri Infantry—a regiment that saw active service in numerous Western Theater campaigns.

Circular forms of hardtack are uncommon, as most were produced in square or rectangular shapes, and the clear “AMERICAN” stamping adds an uncommon element of patriotic branding. The biscuit remains in remarkably sound condition for its age, showing only expected surface wear and discoloration from time.

Items of this ephemeral nature, especially with unit attribution, are rarely encountered in any state of preservation. This piece offers a direct, personal connection to the Union soldier’s experience and the material culture of the Civil War. A remarkable survival of one of the most iconic and humble items of Civil War soldier life.

Comes housed in 8 x 14 riker display case with black velvet and descriptive card.
