Rare Original Abraham Lincoln Mourning Ribbon – “We Mourn / A Father Slain” - Inventory Number: POL 392
A poignant and historically significant silk mourning ribbon issued following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865. The ribbon features a bust portrait of Lincoln within an oval frame, printed in black ink on a cream silk background. Above the portrait appears the bold sentiment “WE MOURN”, with the touching phrase “A Father Slain.” below. This simple yet powerful tribute reflects the profound national grief experienced after the President’s death.
Ribbons such as this were worn by mourners attending funeral processions or memorial events held across the country in honor of the fallen President.
Measuring approximately 6 x 2 inches, the ribbon shows light fraying to the top and bottom edges and minor age toning, consistent with its age and delicate material.
An historic relic of American mourning culture and a powerful symbol of the nation’s loss at the close of the Civil War.
Comes housed in 8 x 12 riker display case with black velvet and descriptive card.
