Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer’s Sword Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, New York

An elegant and historically significant example of the Model 1860 Staff and Field Officer’s Sword, manufactured and retailed by the prominent New York outfitter Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, one of the largest military goods dealers of the Civil War era. This officer’s sword features a double-edged blade with a wide central fuller and finely etched panels bearing “U.S.”, American eagles, and intricate foliate scrollwork. The details remain crisp and deeply etched with bright blade surfaces showing minimal age and wear. The ricasso is clearly marked with the firm’s name: “Schuyler, Hartley & Graham / New-York.” The ornate gilt brass guard displays openwork floral motifs, a patriotic eagle on the knucklebow, and retains strong traces of original gilt finish. The grip is wrapped in sharkskin with its original twisted brass wire intact. The brass-mounted steel scabbard is complete and in excellent condition, featuring detailed, raised decorative mounts and a smooth body with light, even patina. Intended for use by Union officers of field and staff rank, this privately purchased sword blends both martial utility and ceremonial refinement, embodying the prestige of Civil War-era commissioned service. A fine and desirable example of a staff officer’s sidearm, as retailed by one of the most prestigious outfitters of the period.
