Gentleman’s Beaver Top Hat by Leary & Co.

Fine gentleman’s tall beaver top hat retains its original maker’s stamp from Leary & Co., Astor House, New York — the fashionable hatters who operated from the ground floor of John Jacob Astor’s famed hotel on Broadway. Established by James Leary, a close business associate of Astor who had long dealt in fine beaver pelts, Leary & Co. became one of the most prominent and fashionable hat shops in mid-19th century New York. Period views of Broadway, including the famous Currier print, proudly depict the “Leary & Co. Hatters” storefront beneath the Astor House, a testament to the firm’s reputation. Contemporary credit reports described Leary’s as “one of the most fashionable establishments… rich and getting more so every year,” underscoring its status among elite clientele.

The Astor family themselves were notable figures in American history. Colonel John Jacob Astor IV, the great-grandson of the hotel’s founder, served with distinction during the Spanish–American War. He later perished aboard the RMS Titanic in 1912, while his young, pregnant wife survived; their son, John Jacob Astor VI, was famously born after the disaster and became known as the “Titanic Baby.” This connection highlights the remarkable social reach of the Astor name and the prestige attached to businesses associated with the Astor House.

This example, constructed of rich black beaver felt with a high crown and narrow brim, reflects the stylish refinement of the antebellum and Civil War periods. The interior still preserves remnants of its early paper lining with a clear maker’s mark, adding authenticity and period charm.

Top hats such as this were a mark of social standing and refinement, often worn by prominent businessmen, officers, and well-to-do civilians. The survival of both the original lining and the embossed maker’s label makes this piece especially desirable for collectors of Civil War–era clothing and personal effects. A handsome artifact of period headwear that speaks both to the elegance of the era and to the history of one of New York’s most prestigious hatters.
