Original 48mo cloth-bound soldier’s devotional volume containing: The Proverbs; Translated out of the Original Hebrew (New York: American Bible Society, 1864).  

 

Black cloth with gilt title and blind-stamped border.  

 

Typical of scripture portions distributed to Union troops through the U.S. Christian Commission and Sanitary Commission. The small size and date correspond precisely with wartime production intended for field use.  

 

Excellent Civil War–era religious artifact reflecting the moral and spiritual life of the soldier.
