Carved Patriotic Pipe with Shield Motif
Impressive hand-carved wooden pipe measuring approximately 14 inches overall, featuring a long 12-inch stem and a boldly sculpted 2½-inch bowl. The exterior of the bowl is deeply carved with a raised Union shield surrounded by stylized drapery and flag/banner elements—an unmistakably patriotic motif popular during and after the Civil War. The bowl’s interior opening measures 1½ inches across, with a well-aged patina from years of careful handling.
The underside of the bowl is intricately shaped into a stylized pattern, giving the piece a sculptural quality. Likely crafted by a soldier as a piece of folk art or trench art, this pipe reflects both the pride and artistry of the period. Retains a smooth, dark finish throughout with no repairs or losses.
A striking example of mid-19th-century patriotic craftsmanship—ideal for display alongside period tobacco artifacts or personal effects
