Extremely Rare Confederate Artillery Fuse Box, c. 1861-65

A superb and exceedingly scarce Confederate artillery fuse box, constructed in characteristic Southern wartime fashion from chestnut-colored russet leather, entirely hand-stitched with irregular, wide-spaced cotton thread typical of arsenal Confederate manufacture. The leather surfaces show rich period wear, with the front flap displaying the distinctive compressive tooling and tack holes from the stitching block to allow hand stitching of the body.

The closure tab retains its original crudely punched buttonhole, and the box features a crude cast-brass finial, the type frequently seen on Confederate accoutrements where brass shortages forced local foundries to produce rough, sand-cast hardware. The interior retains its original form and profile consistent with known artillery fuse boxes intended for carrying paper time fuses and related small ordnance accessories.

Confederate fuse boxes were produced in extremely small quantities when compared to their Union counterparts.  Only the second example we have encountered in more than 35 years of collecting and handling Confederate accoutrements, making this an exceptional rarity even within advanced Southern collections.
