Colt Model 1862 Police Percussion Revolver

.36 Caliber – Hartford, Connecticut

Civil War Production

Fine example of the Colt Model 1862 Police percussion revolver, combining the compact frame of the Colt Pocket models with the more powerful .36 caliber chambering. Introduced in 1861, this model was produced throughout the Civil War and is among Colt’s most refined percussion revolvers.

The revolver features a five-shot rebated cylinder, round barrel, and Colt-style loading lever. All visible components bear matching serial number “33123,” including the frame, backstrap, and brass trigger guard, confirming correct assembly and originality.

The iron surfaces display a smooth, even gray-to-brown patina with light handling marks and no evidence of modern polishing or refinishing. The brass backstrap and trigger guard retain a pleasing, mellow golden patina. The one-piece walnut grip is well-shaped and properly fitted, showing expected wear and a darkened surface from age and handling.

The revolver is a ver nice example of the Model 1862 Police and complete, with cylinder indexing and mechanical condition funtioning.

Though not an official U.S. military issue arm, the Model 1862 Police was widely purchased privately and carried by Union officers, lawmen, and civilians during the Civil War. Its balance of size, power, and refined design made it a favored personal sidearm throughout the 1860s.

Very good condition, with matching serial numbers, and no major alterations or repairs.
