The Soldier’s Pocket Book, a compact devotional volume prepared specifically “for the defenders of their country” during the height of the war. Issued in 1862 by the Presbyterian Board of Publication of Philadelphia, this book was intended to be carried by Union soldiers in the field, offering prayers, moral guidance, and spiritual comfort.

 

Bound in original green cloth with gilt title “The Soldier’s Pocket Book” on the cover. Interior pages include the 1862 Soldier’s Calendar and publisher’s title page. Pocket religious books such as this were widely distributed by churches and relief organizations and represent an important aspect of Civil War soldier life beyond the battlefield.

 

A desirable example of Union soldier devotional literature and an evocative artifact of the wartime home-front effort to sustain morale and faith.
