Description

U.S. Regulation Tin Cup

Civil War–era U.S. regulation tin cup, constructed of tinned sheet iron and fitted with a reinforced bail-style handle, as prescribed for Federal enlisted equipment during the 1861–1865 period. The cylindrical body features a rolled rim, with the handle secured by riveted reinforcement tabs, a detail intended to strengthen the attachment point for repeated field use.

This form of tin cup was a standard personal item carried by Union soldiers for drinking, cooking, and ration preparation, often worn on the belt, knapsack strap, or tucked within haversacks. The reinforced handle variant reflects wartime improvements made to reduce breakage under campaign conditions.

The cup exhibits honest field wear, darkened patina, and surface oxidation consistent with age and use, with no modern alterations or repairs observed. Overall form remains sound, with excellent structural integrity and strong period character.

A classic and increasingly difficult-to-find example of Civil War regulation soldier equipment, ideal for display alongside accoutrements.
