Description

Robbins & Lawrence Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle

Model 1841 “Mississippi Rifle” originally manufactured by Robbins & Lawrence and later re-bored to.58 caliber for use with MiniĆ© ball ammunition. Lock markings for Robbins & Lawrence remain faintly visible below the bolster though partially worn from years of service.

The barrel tang bears the date 1859 and the rifle retains a fixed rear sight along with two blade front sights-one brass mounted on the front barrel band and a steel blade near the muzzle. The saber bayonet lug has been removed from the barrel.

Steel components exhibit a pleasing salt-and-pepper patina darker around the breech and bolster while the brass furniture has aged to a mellow yellow tone. The front sling swivel has broken from the front band though the rear swivel remains intact.

The ramrod is the correct trumpet-shaped brass tipped rod with divided tip. Some pitting is visible in the bore and the rifling has worn from extended service, consistent with heavy period use.

The Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle earned an enduring place in American arms history through its celebrated use in the Mexican War and its continued service during the Civil War after many examples were altered to accept .58 caliber ammunition. Strongly associated with volunteer and elite formations, the pattern is admired for its handsome lines, substantial brass furniture, and reputation for accuracy. Good examples remain a staple of any advanced U.S. martial arms collection.
