Description
Gettysburg Recovered U.S. Belt Plate
A classic excavated oval U.S. plate recovered from the Gettysburg battlefield, retaining a strong, legible “US” with pleasing, untouched patina. The face shows an even, mellow brown with light green oxidation settling into the recesses, giving the letters excellent contrast and depth. The rim remains well defined, with only honest field wear consistent with long burial.
The reverse displays the familiar arrowhead hooks and tongue device present, all showing expected corrosion from ground action. The back surface exhibits the granular texture typical of Gettysburg-recovered plates.
Recovered from one of the most heavily contested fields of the war, this is a straightforward, honest example that checks all the boxes—correct construction, strong eye appeal, and unquestionable battlefield provenance. A solid representative piece from July 1863.
