Rare Philadelphia Deringer Pocket Pistol 

Fine Condition 

 

A classic and highly desirable Philadelphia-made Deringer pocket pistol, representing one of the most iconic American concealed carry arms of the mid-19th century. This example features a beautifully figured walnut stock with finely checkered grip, complemented by a crisp, engraved lockplate and hammer exhibiting tasteful period scrollwork. The furniture retains an attractive, untouched patina, with the metal surfaces showing a pleasing aged tone consistent with careful preservation.

 

The pistol is fitted with a German silver thumbpiece escutcheon and exhibits the elegant, compact form that made Deringer’s pistols so popular among civilians and officers alike. Mechanically, it appears sound, with strong original configuration intact. The overall condition is very good, with sharp engraving, clean lines, and honest wear that speaks to authenticity rather than restoration.

 

Philadelphia Deringers are among the most collected American percussion pistols, famously associated with personal defense and historical notoriety—including the type used in the Lincoln assassination. Surviving examples in this level of condition, particularly with strong engraving and untouched surfaces, are increasingly difficult to obtain.
