Description

Civil War U.S. Army 6th Corps Badge

Civil War U.S. Army VI Corps identification badge constructed in the iconic Greek cross form associated with the famed Sixth Army Corps of the Army of the Potomac. This example features red wool felt mounted to a period cloth backing, representing the First Division color designation of the corps.

Corps badges were officially adopted in 1863 under Major General Joseph Hooker to strengthen unit pride and battlefield recognition. The VI Corps earned a distinguished combat reputation throughout the war, seeing hard service at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cedar Creek, and during the Appomattox Campaign. The Greek cross became one of the most recognizable and respected insignias of the Union Army.

This badge displays pleasing age and honest wear consistent with wartime use. An excellent identified corps form that would make a fine addition to any collection of Civil War insignia, veteran memorabilia, or Army of the Potomac material.
