Confederate Memorial Day Ribbon for the Unveiling of the Harry Gilmor Monument, Baltimore, June 6, 1887 

Scarce printed silk memorial ribbon issued for Confederate Memorial Day commemorating the unveiling of the monument to famed Confederate cavalry commander Major General Harry W. Gilmor in Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland, on June 6, 1887. Printed in red on cream silk, the ribbon depicts the Gilmor Monument and advertises the evening commemorative program held at Ford’s Grand Opera House. 

Harry Gilmor (1838–1883) was one of Maryland’s most celebrated Confederate officers, earning a reputation as a daring cavalry raider under J.E.B. Stuart. His exploits behind Union lines, including raids through Maryland and Pennsylvania, made him a legendary figure among former Confederates. Following his death in 1883, efforts were undertaken by Maryland veterans and admirers to erect a permanent monument in his honor, culminating in the dedication ceremony represented by this ribbon. 

Postwar Confederate remembrance ribbon that reflects the growth of the Lost Cause memorial movement during the late nineteenth century and survives as a tangible connection to one of Maryland’s most famous Confederate soldiers. Scarce and highly displayable Confederate veterans’ memorial material.
