An original ink signature of James Addams Beaver (1837–1914), Civil War Union brigadier general, decorated veteran, and the 20th Governor of Pennsylvania. Boldly signed “James A. Beaver” and dated “Harrisburg, Pa., 8 March 1890,” during his gubernatorial term.
James A. Beaver distinguished himself as an officer in the Union Army, serving with the 2nd and 148th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was severely wounded multiple times during the Civil War, ultimately losing a leg at the Battle of Ream’s Station in 1864. Following the war, Beaver became one of Pennsylvania’s most respected public figures, serving as Governor from 1887 to 1891, later as a judge of the Pennsylvania Superior Court, and as acting president of Pennsylvania State University. Today, Beaver Stadium at Penn State bears his name in recognition of his lasting contributions to the Commonwealth.

This attractive autograph is executed in dark ink on a period card and includes the desirable location and date, placing it firmly within Beaver’s administration in Harrisburg. The reverse bears period collector’s annotations, further supporting its early provenance.
