“Devil’s Den” Gettysburg Battlefield Souvenir Cane

 

Gettysburg battlefield souvenir swagger stick, hand-carved from wood gathered at Devil’s Den, one of the most fiercely contested locations of the Battle of Gettysburg. Boldly painted in black, the shaft bears the inscription “DEVILS DEN,” identifying the celebrated battlefield landmark where some of the most desperate fighting of July 2, 1863, took place. 

 

Crafted in the late 19th or early 20th century, these souvenir canes were popular with veterans and visitors who sought to preserve a tangible connection to the historic battlefield. Examples specifically identifying Devil’s Den are increasingly difficult to locate, as many were produced in small numbers and were heavily used over the years. 

 

The stick retains its naturally formed root handle, giving it a rustic appearance while highlighting its origin from battlefield timber. The warm, honey-colored wood displays an attractive aged patina, and the boldly painted lettering remains largely legible despite honest wear from age and handling. 

 

A desirable piece of Gettysburg battlefield memorabilia of one of the Civil War’s most iconic and hallowed landscapes.
