Description
Model 1842 H. Aston .54 Caliber Horse Pistol — Dated 1852
Fine example of a U.S. Model 1842 single-shot .54 caliber percussion horse pistol manufactured by H. Aston & Co. in 1852.
The steel barrel, lockplate and swivel ramrod exhibit a smooth gray patina, with fine scattered areas of darker patination along the barrel. The brass buttcap, trigger guard, barrel band and sideplate have aged to an attractive mustard-yellow patina.
The lockplate is clearly marked “U.S. / H. Aston & Co.” beneath the bolster and “Middtn / Conn. / 1852” at the rear. The left side of the barrel breech bears inspector’s initials “SM” and a “P” proof mark. Fine micro-pitting is present around the bolster and barrel breech from the corrosive percussion caps used during its service life.
The original captive swivel ramrod and its mechanism remain intact and operate smoothly. The lock is also in full working order, with the hammer holding securely at both half and full cock.
The walnut stock is complete and solid, displaying only a few scattered minor dings and scratches consistent with honest age and use. Two faint oval inspector’s cartouches remain visible on the left side behind the sideplate. The sideplate screwheads retain traces of vivid fire-blue finish.
A very attractive and complete Model 1842 Aston horse pistol in well-preserved, untouched condition.
