Description

1785 South Carolina Revolutionary War Militia Indent Stub — Issued to Elijah Martin

An exceptional surviving Revolutionary War–era South Carolina indent stub, issued 27 June 1785 as payment for militia service rendered during the war. These indents—official financial instruments issued by the State—were used to compensate soldiers and citizens for military duty, supplies, or other wartime services. Very few survive today, and even fewer retain such legible, elegant script.

This example documents payment to Elijah Martin for:

“Four pounds five shillings and eight pence Sterling for Militia Duty, per account audited.”

The manuscript also records the principal amount (₤4..5..8½) and the calculated annual interest (₤0..5..11), a hallmark of South Carolina’s postwar financial system. The heading reads:

“Entry on stub of indent issued in payment of bill for services rendered in South Carolina militia during the Revolution.”

Written in rich brown ink on period-laid paper, the stub displays beautiful 18th-century penmanship with no modern restoration. Light expected folds and toning are present, with the edges intact and text sharply readable.

A superb and authentic relic of post-Revolutionary compensation—ideal for collectors of early Americana, Revolutionary War documents, and South Carolina militia material.
