Description
1833 Model Dragoon Saber by Ames, Dated 1839
A desirable U.S. Model 1833 Dragoon Saber manufactured by N.P. Ames of Springfield and dated 1839. The spine-backed blade remains bright overall, showing scattered peppering and light age toning. The left face retains a clear engraved “United States” in cursive script over a foliate motif, while the right face bears the maker’s inscription “N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield / 1839,” still legible and well-presented.
The brass hilt, including guard and pommel strap, exhibits a pleasing, mellow yellow patina with minimal spotting. The spiral quillon is stamped with inspector’s initials, matching corresponding markings found on the scabbard drag, adding to the piece’s integrity and appeal. The grip retains its original leather covering, though the twisted wire wrap is no longer present. The leather throat washer at the base of the blade remains intact.
The steel scabbard displays a dark, even patina with moderate peppering. The forward suspension ring has been replaced with a period-style split ring. There are a few minor crimping dents along the body toward the drag, consistent with service use. The drag is inspector marked, further reinforcing the saber’s originality and military inspection history.
A well-marked and attractive Ames example with desirable blade etching and matching inspection marks—an excellent representation of the early dragoon pattern.
