Description
1840 Model Heavy Cavalry Saber by C&J
A solid example of the classic Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, featuring the desirable C&J (Clemens and Jung) maker’s mark stamped within a rectangular cartouche on the left ricasso.
The flat-backed blade remains in very good condition, retaining much of its original brightness with a light, even toning and scattered darker speckling consistent with age. The right ricasso is unmarked, as is correct for many examples.
The brass hilt exhibits a pleasing, untouched patina, showing a mellow yellow tone with darker freckling from age and handling. The grip retains its original leather covering, though most of the twisted wire wrap is now absent.
The leather blade washer at the guard is lacking. The saber is accompanied by its steel scabbard, which has developed a dark gray patina with heavier peppering throughout. There is visible wear and age to the metal, consistent with service.
An interesting and attractive feature is the presence of two buff leather straps attached to the scabbard rings, joining to a third steel ring. These appear period and likely originate from a pre-war or militia saber belt, adding both character and display appeal.
A strong, honest “Old Wristbreaker” with good markings and classic form—an excellent addition to any Civil War or even Mexican War-era collection.
