Description
1840 Model Heavy Cavalry Saber by Sheble & Fisher, Philadelphia
A classic example of the U.S. Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, bearing the desirable maker’s mark of Sheble & Fisher, Philadelphia, clearly stamped on the ricasso. This robust, flat-backed blade exhibits an even gray patina with scattered areas of darker toning and light peppering, consistent with age and honest service.
The brass three-branch hilt retains a pleasing, untouched patina, showing a mellow golden tone. The leather-wrapped grip is largely intact, with original wire still present, though showing typical wear and some loss to the leather wrap. The blade-to-hilt junction remains solid, with no looseness noted.
Accompanied by its original iron scabbard, which displays a deep, dark brown patina with scattered pitting, particularly toward the drag. The mounts and rings remain intact, completing a well-matched and untouched example.
A strong, honest cavalry saber with an identifiable Philadelphia maker, offering excellent display appeal and collector desirability.
