1844 “Peace Flask” by N. P. Ames

An attractive and well-preserved example of the classic martial “Peace Flask,” measuring 9 inches in height by 4 inches across at its widest point. Constructed of heavy brass, the body displays a mellow, untouched patina and crisp, high-relief decoration on both faces. The central design features an American eagle facing left, perched above clasped hands encircled by a ring of stars. Below, a detailed martial trophy incorporates crossed flags, cannons, rifles, swords, and a Federal shield emblazoned “U.S.” — a motif symbolizing national unity and military readiness. The flask retains its two triangular suspension rings. At the base of the spout is clearly stamped “1844” and “N. P. Ames,” denoting manufacture by the noted Ames firm of Chicopee, Massachusetts.

Condition is very good overall: the seams remain tight, the relief sharp, and the surfaces richly toned. Minor imperfections include a few small body dents and a slightly compressed spout opening, but no repairs or structural issues are evident. These iconic “Peace Flasks,” so called for their clasped-hands motif, were produced under U.S. Ordnance Department contract in the mid-1840s and issued to troops alongside Model 1841 “Mississippi” Rifles. They represent one of the most recognizable patterns of American military accoutrements from the antebellum era.
