Description

1860 Model Light Cavalry Saber – New York Cavalry Marked, Dated 1865

A Civil War-era Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber bearing a late-war 1865 manufacture date and desirable New York cavalry markings on the hilt. Though lacking its scabbard, this saber remains an attractive and historically interesting example of the iconic cavalry weapon carried by Union mounted troops during the final year of the Civil War.

The blade exhibits an even, deep brown patina over much of its surface, creating a pleasing untouched appearance. The tip has been rounded and re-shaped at some point in its history, but the blade remains solid and displays well. Near the ricasso on the right side are the standard U.S. inspection markings, including “U.S.”, inspector’s initials “G.M.W.”, and the date “1865.” No visible markings are present on the reverse ricasso.

The brass guard and pommel have developed a rich, dark mustard-yellow patina consistent with age and service. The guard bears notable markings identifying its New York cavalry association. The left side of the guard is stamped “GHD” above “1 N.Y. CAV.”, while the pommel cap is marked with the number “14.” The upper branch of the guard has been bent slightly forward, a common occurrence on service-used cavalry sabers.

The grip retains most of its original leather covering. The original twisted wire wrap is no longer present and has been replaced with copper wire applied in a non-original manner. The saber is also missing its leather blade washer.

While the original scabbard is absent, the saber possesses strong visual appeal and remains a representative example of a late-war cavalry weapon. The combination of a clearly dated 1865 blade and New York cavalry markings adds additional interest for collectors seeking identifiable Civil War arms.

Introduced just before the outbreak of the Civil War, the Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber became the standard saber of Union cavalry forces and remains one of the most recognizable edged weapons of nineteenth-century America. This example offers an affordable opportunity to acquire a marked Civil War cavalry saber with documented military associations and attractive display qualities.
