Description
Original XVIII Corps Badge – Third Division, Regulation Pinback Example
A scarce and attractive original Civil War XVIII Corps, Third Division badge, of the classic quatrefoil pattern, executed in gilt brass with dark blue cloth inset denoting Third Division. This is a regulation manufactured example, retaining its original period pinback device on the reverse, rather than a sewn or field-made variant.
The XVIII Corps served with distinction in the Department of the South and later the Army of the James, seeing heavy action in the assaults on Fort Wagner, operations against Charleston, and throughout the Petersburg Campaign. Third Division elements were deeply engaged in siege operations and attacks on fortified positions, earning a reputation for hard, sustained service.
This example displays a mellow, untouched patina across the brass face, with the dark blue cloth center remaining intact and well-preserved. The reverse shows a proper period pin assembly, confirming its intended wear as a uniform badge rather than improvised construction.
An honest and desirable wartime corps badge, free from the post-war embellishment and reproduction issues that dominate the market today.
