6th U.V.U. (Union Veteran Union) Wreath Hat Insignia
An attractive Union Veteran Union insignia featuring the raised silvered letters “U.V.U.” surmounted by the number “6”, encircled by a finely detailed gilt brass laurel wreath tied with a bow at the base. The reverse retains its original soldered pin fastener, showing correct period construction.
The Union Veteran Union (U.V.U.) was formed in the 1880s by former Union soldiers as a fraternal organization distinct from—but parallel to—the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.). Members of the U.V.U. often wore insignia like this on their slouch hats, reunion caps, or badges, identifying their post or regiment number. The “6th” denotes the individual post or local chapter within the national organization.
A fine post–Civil War veteran’s relic, representing the enduring camaraderie and pride of Union servicemen in the decades following the war.
