Roche – Inventory Number: ALB 248 Scarce albumen photograph of a dead Confederate soldier in the muddy trenches of Fort Mahone outside of Petersburg, Virginia. The photograph was taken on April 3, 1865 by T.C. Roche, the day after Union forces broke through Robert E. Lee’s defensive lines around the city. The albumen is mounted on piece of 9” by 8” cardstock.
